A fire breathing Guy Pearce?

Really? You are going to have him breath fire?

It is probably a good thing they are not doing another individual movie for Iron Man. I think the shine on this character from the first movie and The Avengers has worn off by the end of Iron Man 3. There were many flaws (just watch CinemaSins they point them out to you with glee), but it does help to set up questions as to what does Tony does from here.

I know there was a sub-plot about Tony suffering from PTSD and that is great that they show there was some trauma from an alien attack he nearly died in. Outside of that, it feels like there was no real repercussions from a battle that probably killed thousands of people and destroyed billions of dollars’ worth of property. I know that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will deal with that, but I wished the movies would have dealt with it beyond the trauma the heroes suffered (and Stark was the only one apparently who suffered any kind of trauma).

I only remember The Mandarin from the 90’s Iron Man cartoons and all he wanted to do was steal Stark’s inventions each week. Apparently The Ten Rings organization that kidnaped Stark in Iron Man works for The Mandarin (the real one) and the movies were going to work towards him (again, the real one) when Favreau was originally in charge. I don’t know why the new writers and director went with the bait and switch, the real Mandarin sounded much cooler than AIM and Aldrich Killian with his way out there ability to breath fire(that was really dumb, by the way). Just for future references, if they never show the villain monologuing, than the villain is a fake, they always want to monologue and film makers love showing it. When Killian said that “The Mandarin” does not want people talking to him or he does not come into the room spouting his agenda for taking over the world, that should have been the clue he was bogus. In the Marvel One Shot All Hail the King, it is revealed there is a real Mandarin and he is angry his name was used in the pretend terror plot. I have no idea what this will mean for future movies especially considering Downey is only contracted thru Civil War, unless Marvel already has an idea of how they are going to replace Downey/Stark, but keep the Iron Man suit. It’s not like it hasn’t been done in the comics, I’m sure.

Tony Stark talks about creating his own demons and his sins of the past come back to haunt him. He is referring to Killian and Maya Hansen specifically, but he kinda had been creating his own demons in the other two Iron Man movies as well. His self-indulgence and refusal to have any accountability fed Obadiah Stain’s greed. Stark’s flagrant disrespect and disregard for Justin Hammer got him to seek out Ivan Vanko, who in turn could build the tech that could have taken down Stark. At the end of the movie he alludes to the idea that he learned his lesson, but he creates Ultron. Granted, Ultron was created for other more heroic purposes, but knowing Stark, he most likely pushed things too far trying to test the limits and started Ultron down the path of destruction (totally speculating, I am probably way off base here).

He did grow up some in the time between The Avengers and Iron Man 3. He admits to Pepper his fears of losing her and his sanity and told her about the nightmares he has about nearly dying. The Tony Stark from Iron Man 2 internalized his fears and became self-destructive at the thought of dying, this Tony just builds more suits to have as a security blanket. He is able to let the security blankets (and his mini ark reactor) go in the end and tries to figure himself out beyond Iron Man. Is this why he creates Ultron when what’s left of S.H.I.E.L.D. comes calling to help save the world from Hydra? My theory is he doesn’t want to have to go back to the suits now he is getting older and just wants to be with Pepper, but he doesn’t want to leave his friends hanging when there is a threat. Ultron could use the tech from his suits to be his replacement. I’m probably wrong.

What did you guys think of my theories? Please feel free to give some of your own in the comments. Can we also petition Marvel to never have Shane Black direct another Marvel movie? Next up, we move on to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
