Spring is here (well it is here in Texas) and that means it is time for Agents of SHIELD to come back from its four month winter hibernation. To make sure all of you good little SHIELD agents are ready to dive back into the adventures of our favorite crack team, here is a little run down to make sure you know what all our main people have been up to.
Do I really have to tell you that there are Spoilers ahead?
When things started off Director Coulson, Bobbie, Hunter, Mack, and Daisy (formerly Skye) have been searching for Inhumans who have been unknowingly exposed to Terregin. Along the way the team constantly runs into the ATCU (Advance Threat Containment Unit) whose director is the fascinating Rosalind. Fearing the ATCU is killing or at the least hurting the Inhumans they find, Coulson attempts to find out exactly these people are. Rosalind is cunning and a slippery super spy, but she doesn’t want to kill Inhumans. The ATCU has been placing them in stasis to keep both them and their families safe until a cure is found. But there is someone out there killing Inhumans. SHIELD teams up with the ATCU (that is a lot of acronyms BTW) to find out exactly who. Coulson and Rosalind team up in more ways than one if you know what I mean (I’m talking sexy times here). While trying to save/recruit Lincoln, Daisy and Mack run into a creature known as Lash who has been hunting down and killing Inhumans by blasting a hole in their chests using energy he emits from his hands. More on him in just a bit.
Fitz was using every bit of knowledge he can get his hands on about the monolith to find information as to what happened to Jemma when she was pulled into the structure. Coulson turns to an Asgardian living on Earth. No not Thor, but Elliot Randolph (please come back for more episodes Peter MacNicol) who has seen some of the writing that pertains to the monolith before written on the walls of an English castle. SHIELD takes the monolith to the castle and find there is a machine set up to turn the monolith into a portal. Fitz jumps thru the portal, finds Simmons, and brings her back to our world. She is traumatized from her ordeal there, but okay. Eventually she tells the story of what happened to her while stranded in the other world and why she needs to find a way to return there.
While Jemma was stuck in the other world she met Will. He was an astronaut with NASA sent thru the portal in 2001 with a team to study the other world and find a way back. The team was not the only beings on the planet. There was another being living on the planet which terrorized the crew, making them go crazy and homicidal on each other. Will was the only survivor and he continued to survive by hiding underground and not going into areas where the creature mostly dwelled. Will called it the No Fly Zone. Jemma at first didn’t believe him and ran off to see the NFZ because she thought might hold some answers as to how to get home. It was there she saw the creature and she ran back to Will with her apologies and a plan to get them both back. The two of them used equipment left behind by the NASA team to plot where the next portal would open again. Unfortunately too many obstacles in their way kept them from making it to the portal in time.
The two of them turned to each other for comfort and companionship since they were out of options to ever return home. What Jemma didn’t count on was Fitz not giving up. When she heard him calling out for her when he came thru the portal, she ran to him with Will in tow. Before the two of them could find Fitz, the creature created a sandstorm and appeared. Will told Jemma to keep running towards Fitz while he dealt with the creature. Jemma tried to stay behind for Will, but she heard a gunshot and Will no longer answered her calls for him. She could only hear Fitz. Jemma felt guilty she left Will on the other planet and wants to try and find a way to reopen the portal and rescue him, but she needs Fitz’s help since the monolith was destroyed when they rescued her. Fitz being the good man that he is starts to do more research on the monolith.
Hunter is determined to find Ward before Bobbie is fully healed and back in the field (for the moment she is on lab duty) and he goes to the one person who hates Ward about as much as he does. Melinda May. May had gone on a beautiful vacation with Andrew to try and rekindle their relationship. After returning, Andrew became distant and then broke things off with her. While Andrew continued to work with SHIELD in evaluating new Inhumans they have found to determine if they are safe to join the team or be released into the wild, May went to go and take care of her father who was hurt car accident. Hunter goes to her and proposes the two of them (with authorization from Coulson) go underground to find out exactly what Ward is up to.
After exploiting a couple of contacts Hunter has formed over the years as a mercenary, the duo finds Ward attempting to rebuild Hydra with a new group of blood thirsty baddies. He also gains the help from the son of a former Hydra head that was cut off and the mysterious Gideon Malick. May and Hunter’s covers are blown fairly quickly when Ward asks to meet the new guy. There is a tense standoff where Ward threatens to kill Andrew if the two of them don’t back off and let Ward go. Hunter is too blind with his need to kill Ward and shots him anyways, but doesn’t kill him. Ward’s goons corner Andrew, but he manages to just barely get away with only a few injuries.
May’s hunt for Ward has now become really personal and she fires Hunter as her partner and gets Bobbie to quick milking her recovery and help her. The two women find the son of the former Hydra head as he is about to be beaten to death by the Hydra goons working for Ward (the kid had lost his usefulness). Before the kid succumbs to a coma, he tells May the only reason why Andrew survived the attack was because he transformed into a creature that killed the other Hydra goons by blasting a hole thru their chests with energy coming from his hands. Andrew is Lash and no one watching the show was surprised about that.
While looking for patterns as to how Lash finds the Inhumans he has killed, Lincoln and Daisy notice there was an email thread several of the Inhumans living at Afterlife received pretending to be a safe contact for each other. But it was Lash contacting them and tracing where they are living. The only way anyone would have known who those Inhumans were was thru a ledger Jaiying kept. A ledger Andrew was studying. SHIELD and the ATCU capture Andrew and place him in stasis with May’s permission to keep him from harming others.
Unfortunately that is not the last of the problems for Coulson’s team. The mysterious Gideon Malick is a major government player, Rosalind’s boss, and a Hydra head working with Ward to bring a monstrous Inhuman back from the world it was banished to by using the same company that hired NASA to send Will and his team thru. The world where Jemma ended up after being pulled thru the monolith and Fitz is currently working on a new portal to. Much to Rosalind’s shock, the ATCU (who is actually Hydra) is planning to use the Inhumans they have collected in stasis as an army to the Big Bad Inhuman once they find a way to bring him to this world. Rosalind tries to help SHIELD, but she is killed by Ward during her romantic dinner with Coulson. Hold on, I need a moment after remembering that…
Making matters more desperate for Coulson, Ward kidnaps Jemma and Fitz, brings them to the castle where they had opened the portal before, and tortures Jemma in front of Fitz to get the information he found to reopen the it. Ward, Fitz, and a team of Hydra goons go thru the portal to find the creature. Before he goes, Fitz promises to Jemma he will find Will and kill the creature before it can come here. As the portal is closing, Coulson dives into it and is sent to the world behind Fitz and Ward. Shortly after Coulson dives into the portal Bobbie, Hunter, Daisy, Lincoln, and newcomer Inhuman Joey secure the castle and hold positions over the portal incase the creature makes it out. The team also set up lots of bombs around the portal chamber to destroy it once all of this is over.
While in the other world, Fitz follows the directions Jemma had mapped out to find the bunker she shared with Will. He is there, but he is injured from his fight with the creature. Ward tries to get information about the creature from Will and he tells Ward that the creature lives in the NFZ where Ward and the Hydra goons need to get to in order to make the next portal back. Will starts to lead them to the NFZ when he and Fitz take advantage of a sandstorm and kill a couple of Hydra goons before running. Ward starts to follow them, but Coulson finds him first. Coulson takes Ward as his prisoner and carts him off to the NFZ hoping both Will and Fitz will already be there. Will and Fitz make it to the portal ad Coulson and Ward are right on their heels. But Will is not Will. He is the creature and when he and Will fought, the creature killed Will and took over his body. Creature Will tires to make it to the portal, but Fitz bashes his head in with a rock and seemingly kills Creature Will. While Fitz and Will fight it out, Ward takes the opportunity to blindside Coulson and the two of them begin fighting each other. Coulson gets the upper hand and crushes Ward’s chest in with his robot hand, killing him.
Fitz and Coulson make it back thru the portal where Daisy, Lincoln, Bobbie, Hunter, and Joey are waiting. The group quickly makes their way to the new SHIELD bus just as the bombs they set up go off. Before the site was blown to hell, Lash escaped from his containment unit and killed all of the Inhumans in waiting in stasis. Malick was able to get away before SHIELD took over and destroyed everything; but as he is driving off and licking his wounds, he sees Ward in the middle of the road. But it is not Ward, it is the creature. After Fitz bashed Creature Will’s head in, the creature’s essence slid out of Will’s dead body into Ward’s.
Questions for the back half of the season:
Now that you are all caught up, do you think the creature is going to happily work with Malick? Or do you think it has an agenda of its own? Nerdist News confirmed the creature is going to be Hive.
SHIELD thinks they defeated Hydra’s next big attack and is looking to recruit more Inhumans. How long do you think it will take them to find out that Ward is sorta back and is an even bigger threat than he was before? How much of a budget do you think Agents of SHIELD has to give to cool new Inhumans?
Where do you think Lash/Andrew is now and how is he going to be on the spectrum of heroes and villains on the show? Do you think he will play into AOS’s version of the Civil War storyline?
How do you think the mission to find more Inhumans is going to play into the Civil War storyline? I think that because there will be an Inhumans movie coming down the line in a few years, they might mention something about an outbreak of Inhumans, but I don’t expect more than that in Civil War. Much like The Winter Soldier, the events of Civil War is going to have a huge effect on what happens in the last few episodes of Agents of SHIELD.
I think in the episodes leading to Civil War will have Daisy and Coulson at odds with one another. I have no doubt the subject of superhero registration will be broached very soon on the show and I don’t think Daisy will agree with it. It is just another version of the Index and a way to make her fellow Inhumans work for the government whether they want to or not. Coulson will most likely follow orders and may see a good in the registration. He was never again the existence of the Index.
What do you think we will see in the back half of season three? Do you see a mini Civil War happening within the SHIELD team? What sides do you think each team member will take? What do you think Creature Ward will do now that he is on this side of the universe? Let me know what you think in the comments section below and don’t forget to come back here every Wednesday for recaps and theories for Agents of SHIELD.
