Last night was the big Star Trek event for fans celebrating 50 years of the TV show and also celebrating the newest installment of the movie franchise. It was there that the long awaited second trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released. Take a look after the jump:
The first trailer was all about the action and there is plenty of that in this one as well, but there is also more of a look at the internal conflict going on within Kirk and Spock in the beginning that may be the driving emotional plot of the film. It seems as if both men are questioning their place within Star Fleet. Kirk feels like he joined Star Fleet “on a dare” and isn’t sure who he is. I’m not sure what is going on with Spock, but when the voice over from Shohreh Aghdashloo (who is playing the High Command) talks about how it is “easy to get lost” and the ship and crew is all one has, Spock is shown looking troubled.
Then all hell breaks loose as the Enterprise is literally torn to shreds and the crew must abandon ship and be scattered around a hostile planet. The crew must find a way back together again and off the planet in order to survive.
There has been so little marketing for Star Trek Beyond it has made many people wonder what in the hell is going on. Assassin’s Creed and Rogue One (both do not hit theaters until December) have had more interaction with fans on social media than the latest Star Trek. Some have speculated that the film is in trouble, but Paramount has come out recently and said they were saving it all for the fan celebration. Now the celebration is over, hopefully the marketing machine goes into full effect and the bad speculation can go away.
Star Trek Beyond arrives in theaters July 22, 2016, but if you are one of the few that is going to Comic Con, I am massively jealous because there will be an early screening at the outdoor theater there.
