Noah grieves as Emma, Kieran, and Audrey look for answers, and the Lakewood killer(s) sets up their master plan.
Spoilers for “Heavenly Creatures”
A Super Quick Recap:
Because I want to dig into some theories.
Noah is (very understandably) done with death after losing Zoey and has Audrey, Emma, and Kieran take down his murder board. While completing the task, the three of them notice a newspaper clipping of Will’s funeral. If you have seen the promos, you know what they found. Needing to know for sure Eli could be the killer, Kieran looks around in his cousin’s room while Emma and Audrey watch over Facetime. He finds the letters Piper and Audrey exchanged along with the photos Emma saw of herself as a kid at the barn way back in episode one. Kieran puts everything back where he found it and the two girls head to the old James farm to see if there is more evidence Eli was there. While there, the duo find the hidden room the Sheriff discovered last episode (minus the photos, but add Emma’s dream journal) and see another car drive up.
Mayor Maddox (wanting to recover evidence of his cons stolen from him by Eli) shows up at the barn after receiving texts to meet there. Maddox is stabbed by the killer with a pitchfork. Wanting to know why Brook’s father is at the barn, Audrey and Emma go to investigate. They find the dying Mayor and try to stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the wound, but it is too little too late. The police drive up and Emma with Audrey hold their blood covered hands up.
I don’t think Eli is the killer. Why he is in the photo at Will’s funeral, I don’t know (maybe he was stalking Kieran?). But he and his mother seem more like con artists, not killers. Plus, if he is, the Scream showed their cards way too early.
Let’s start with the longest running theory. Kieran is the killer. He has been at the top of everyone’s suspect list since episode one. He was the new guy in town who automatically went for Emma (the main object of torment in the first season), he was filmed with Nina at a bar by Rachel (putting him in direct contact with two of the first three victims before he met everyone else and became friendly with Emma). The only explainable reason Rachel was murdered is she filmed him and Nina together. The killer never claimed responsibility for the death of Rachel because he/she/they didn’t want to draw attention to the videos Rachel had on her laptop. When Emma chose Will over Kieran, Will was split in half. Kieran was only let off the hook when his father was murdered and Piper was revealed to be the killer.
Even now, his part in everything looks way too off. The emails sent to Emma’s father were sent from her computer that Kieran easily had access to. We never see him get kidnapped by the killer and taken to the funhouse during the carnival. Audrey fake kidnapping herself to throw Noah off may have been a nod to us that Kieran would pull the same trick later. Kieran is conveniently missing when every attack goes down. Haley was a little too giggly at Emma when talking about her special secret friend. Anything he found in Eli’s room incriminating his cousin could have been planted by Kieran. He overheard Eli and Tina talking about the paper Eli stole, he even saw them for himself. He could have texted the mayor to meet him knowing that would get him out to the barn.
What if Kieran was Piper’s accomplice the entire time? Why would he be working with Piper? Maybe they were lovers? But why kill his father? He did seem very broken up about that.
Kieran being Piper’s accomplice the entire time doesn’t seem too plausible. There is a possibility he teamed up with Piper’s accomplice because he blames Audrey and Emma for what happened to his father. The biggest hiccup in that theory is why would he team up with someone who had a hand in killing his father? He also genuinely looked concerned when Emma was arrested at the end of the episode.
The next prevailing theory is Stavo is the killer. He is obsessed with death and drawing dead people. He has a nefarious past which includes the possible murder (or at least death by inaction) of his friend for art purposes. Stavo has been conveniently missing for several attacks as well. In last night’s episode, Stavo sent Noah an email to inspire the podcaster to keep going. Shortly thereafter Noah’s computer is hacked and the video incriminating Audrey and Emma was released. He has a Brandon James mask. He could be involved for the graphic novel he is drawing, he needs a fresh story to tell (remember in Scream 2 the second killer’s motive was wanting to be the poster child for violence on TV makes people violent, and oh yeah, spoilers for that movie).
Several of the killings happened to be Brook centric (Jake, Seth, Quinn Maddox) and Stavo loves Brook. He killed Jake to get the boyfriend out of the way for he and Brook to be together. Seth was killed because he was bothering her. The mayor was killed because his pleas were the reason why Brook decided to go home and leave the comfy nest Stavo and Brook had together at the hotel. The text message Audrey gets about cutting people off, what if that text is about Brook cutting off Stavo and going home, not Emma like she assumes. It is Brook’s father that is killed after the killer talks about cutting deeper.
I genuinely don’t have an argument as to why he might not be the killer. If you have any, feel free to comment below.
My next suspect is Kristen Lang. She has a past with Piper at the child-molesting orphanage, a story she easily defects with talk of Stavo’s obsession with death when Sheriff Acosta comes to question her. She moves to town after Piper’s death and tapes conversations with Emma along with some other students. She locked Emma in her office where Emma is taunted by the killer to the point of breaking the window so she can escape, making Emma look unstable. It was a photo in her house that led the gang to the party being thrown at the orphanage where Piper’s body is discovered and Haley is killed. When asked who could have had an obsession with Brandon James, Kristen points to Emma. At the hospital, the teacher starts screaming when she sees Emma. This could be because Kieran was right behind her, or because Lang is making Emma look sketchy.
Lang’s attack at the school throws my theory off. Yes, it could have been staged, but why talk to the killer on the phone beforehand? Why would the killer wave Seth’s hand at her before chasing her? Timing had to be spot on if the janitor was going to interrupt in time. If she is one of the killers, then the attack is to throw us off suspecting her much like in season one when Will was taken and Piper was struck and knocked out in the process.
Let’s not forget Kevin Duval could be the killer. Maggie and Acosta have made several statements that have us all thinking Brandon James didn’t kill those students in the first place. What if it was Kevin who killed all those kids and blamed it on Brandon? Of course, why would he team up with Piper, the daughter of Brandon? Why would he want to torture his own child? Same argument could be made for Maggie as a possible killer.
Who do you think the killer or killers on Scream are? Is there any you suspect that I didn’t mention here? Talk to me in the comments section below.
