Scream – The Last Stand of the Lakewood Five

Piper’s final surprise is revealed, but does that mean it is the end of the mystery? (If there is no season three, then yes, this is the end)

Emma and Audrey are Thelma & Louiseing it after the Lakewood killer springs the two from the back of a police car, killing a deputy in the process. The tormentor calls and informs the two if they are caught or turn themselves in, he will kill one of their friends. With the rest of the Lakewood Five, Emma calls out the killer telling him to come to the theater and finish this game they are playing. When Brook is stabbed and Audrey is kidnapped in their attempt to catch the killer, Emma decides she must go it alone.

Piper’s accomplice sends a message to Emma telling her to go to the orphanage or Audrey dies. Giving Kieran one last goodbye and “I love you,” she goes to rescue her best friend. Audrey is chained up, wearing the killer’s rain coat, and unconscious when Emma finds her. Before she can find a way to free her partner, Kieran shows up to help. Then Eli comes stumbling in with a stab wound. He claims it was Kieran who attacked him when he followed to help Emma. His cousin is the reason for the restraining order against him.

Eli and Kieran were in love with the same girl and to get his competitor out of the way, Kieran posted naked photos of the girl on line and blamed Eli. Kieran pleads with his girlfriend that Eli is lying and calls him a psycho. Eli attacks him for the insult and Emma shoots him in the stomach. Kieran takes the gun from Emma and tells her to check on Audrey who is waking up. “You will feel safe again,” he assures her.

But something is not right with that statement. The killer told Emma she “will never feel safe again.” It is too strange her boyfriend would use the same phrase. Then it all clicks into place. Kieran was Piper’s accomplice. Eli starts to get up and calls for Emma, but Kieran shoots him several times in the chest. The two women fight Kieran off and turn the tables on their tormentor. Emma has the gun and could end Kieran’s life, but she chooses not to. He can rot in prison for his crimes. The sheriff’s department shows up to take the real killer away.

Life in Lakewood goes back to normal as Emma and Audrey bond of the simple fun of going to a movie. Brook and Stavo have breakfast with his father as the father and son try to repair their relationship. Noah does his “I told you there was an accomplice” dance on his podcast. Kristen Lang goes ahead with her book about Emma and Audrey. But somethings are still not right. Maggie finds the note she wrote pleading with Brandon James to leave Emma alone pinned to the tree with a knife and a bloody finger print smudged on it. As Kieran is in prison, he gets a phone call from his “lawyer” asking him “who told you you could wear my mask?”

Questions, Thoughts, and Theories:

RIP Eli. You were creepy, but I have to agree with Kieran when he said that you might have actually really liked Emma. (Of course there is a chance he could come back)

Noah has the best ramblings when things get tense. “I’m here, in the dark, not alone. Emma will be right back. Kieran and Audrey are safe. Everything’s okay. Stavo showing up is just a fluke. And Eli…I’m sure he’s just misunderstood.”

I threw out so many different theories as to who the killer could be, one of them was bound to hit the mark. Congratulations to all of us who called Kieran as the killer and Piper’s accomplice (and lover)!!!

The reveal of Kieran as Piper’s partner in crime answers the lingering question as to why Rachel was killed in season one. She saw Kieran with Nina at the bar.

As the story goes, Piper and Kieran hooked up and bonded over their parents giving them up. Maggie gave Piper up for adoption and she ended up being raised in the horrible orphanage. Kieran’s father, Clark (who had a drug problem I completely forgot about), gave Kieran to his mother to “party with painkillers” in Lakewood. When it was looking like Maggie and Clark were starting to date and maybe have a happy life together, Piper and Kieran snapped and started going on a murder spree.

I think Kieran targeted Jake, Branson, Zoey, and Quinn because they are the loved ones of Noah and Brook. Eddie was killed to help frame Audrey, but I’m willing to bet he could have pointed out Kieran paid Piper a few visits as well. The point of the killings this season is to make Audrey and Emma look guilty of murder. When Kieran slays the Mayor and leaves the two girls with blood on their hands, their friends would turn their backs on them. I guess he didn’t count on their loyalty. Or he was hoping to kill both Noah and Brook in the theater during the big showdown and continue laying the blame on Emma and Audrey.

Of course there is that whole phone call to Kieran at the end of the episode. There really is no way he could have committed all those murders in season two by himself. He needed an accomplice of his own. Or is there another mastermind behind the killings using Piper and Kieran’s anger to get their own revenge?

The ending leaves us all with a nice little cliffhanger, but there is hope if there is no season three. There will be a Halloween special airing on Netflix (I think) that could wrap things up nicely. It is two episodes that didn’t get to air on MTV when season two order was cut towards the beginning of the season from fourteen to twelve. Check out the teaser here:

Some possible theories as to that phone call and who is wearing the mask in the teaser.

The obvious answer is Brandon James himself. Thru flashbacks it is revealed Brandon survived the police ambush and Maggie and Acosta help him. Now he is back and wants to finish what he started all those years ago. Torturing the people and their families who harassed him. It would explain the very aggressive way the note Maggie left for him is sent back to her. He doesn’t forgive her for giving up their child, then marrying Kevin Duvall (one of his biggest bullies) and having a daughter with him.

The next most obvious answer is Troy James. Brandon dies anyways because Maggie and Acosta didn’t get his brother to medical help. Maggie brings Emma around the James family because she still keeps in touch and Troy becomes angry that she gave up his niece, but kept the daughter she had with Kevin. Eli found out the Mayor was scamming the family and Troy may have lost their farm as a result, acting as the final catalyst.

If it is either of the James’ boys (or both?), then one of them could have introduced Piper to Kieran knowing they would bond over their shared hatred of their family that tossed them aside to have a better life. Kieran or one of the James’ boys could have caused the accident that killed Kieran’s mother and stepfather to get him sent to Lakewood. Thus the killings begin.

Kevin Duvall could just as easily have been a master mind in everything. There is a lot of speculation he was the original Lakewood killer and Brandon James was made to take the fall. Wanting to continue his legacy, he manipulates Piper and Kieran into going to Lakewood and do the Natural Born Killers thing. Since Kieran survived, Kevin calls him to ask why the boyfriend is taking credit for the legacy the father started.

One last theory, it is a very loose one. Stavo has a Brandon James mask and was pushing Brook to believe Emma and Audrey were involved in the killings. He also conveniently showed up at the movie theater before Brook was stabbed (and she wasn’t killed because Stavo does care for her). Maybe Kieran and Stavo paired up and bonded over their shared hatred of their neglectful, law enforcement fathers. Stavo was calling to tease Kieran for borrowing Stavo’s mask and they are planning to break Kieran out of prison.
