This Week in Nerd News

Casting updates for upcoming blockbusters, new developments in TV, and the death of an icon all round out the biggest news stories in the Nerd Realm.

RIP Gene Wilder:

Let’s start off with the sad news of the beloved actor’s passing on Monday.  The Willy Wonka and Blazing Saddles star passed away due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.  Legions of celebrities and fans alike took to social media to mourn the loss.  The world has become a little less awesome without such an amazing star.

DC News:

Ben Affleck nearly broke Twitter when he posted a test shot what appears to be Deathstroke on his feed all but confirming the popular villain as the next nemesis for the solo Batman film Affleck and Geoff Johns are working on.  Joe Manganiello is currently rumored to be in talks to play the role.

In possible other villain news, The Rogues are rumored to be the villains of The Flash solo film hitting theaters in March of 2018.

Greg Berlanti, the creator of all the CW/DC shows, along with Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil (The Game and Being Mary Jane) are looking to give Black Lightning his own show.  The CW has stated it has no more room on its programming schedule for more superhero shows, so there is a possibility Jefferson Pierce will have a home on a different network than his other DC counterparts.

Marvel News:

The whereabouts of Thor during the events of Civil War was released in promotion of the superhero vs superhero’s Blu-Ray release along with a teaser for the special featurette on Doctor Strange.

SPOILER ALERT The Russo Brothers, in an interview with The Huffington Post, confirmed when Steve Rodgers dropped the shield at the end of Civil War, he gave up the title of Captain America.  In the comics, a very disillusioned Rogers became Nomad and still fought crime under that guise before eventually coming back to the Stars and Stripes.  Rogers will be back for Infinity War, but he just might not be carrying that shield.  Living in Wakanda, he may have had another one made for him.

Jon Favreau has been confirmed he will return to the MCU, but not as a director (boo).  He will have a cameo as Happy Hogan (yay!), Tony Stark’s chauffeur and (kinda sorta) bodyguard, in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Vin Diesel and director James Gunn revealed there is a super-secret Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 script just for the actor which has the lines Groot would be saying when he says “I am Groot” so Diesel will know the type of emotion to put behind the one line.

Speaking of GOG2, Gunn has asked that fans stop harassing him about releasing the trailer.  A trailer was cut and released to fans at SDCC in July, but was not released to the public.  Gunn and Marvel Studios God, Kevin Feige, has said that they want to wait until more of the CGI is complete and release a better trailer for fans later on.  Besides, Gunn does not cut trailers for public release (Studios source that out to other companies) and has no say as to when the trailers are released, so how about we all learn how to be cool and not be so demanding, okay?

Agents of SHIELD and Entertainment Weekly released the first photo of Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes and Spoiler TV has revealed the title for the season four premiere will be “The Ghost.” Season four premieres September 20th on ABC and comeback here for weekly recaps.

Star Wars News:

Yoda may or may not appear in Episode VIII.  Frank Oz was seen in Ireland on the set and there were reports of a Yoda puppet having been made for filming, but no one is currently confirming or denying these rumors.

September 30th will see the release of the toys to promote Rogue One and Toys-R-Us has announced several stores will be doing a midnight release party.  If you go to you can preorder the toys for the newest Star Wars release.

Other Movie News:

The latest live action remake from Disney, Beauty and the Beast, released a photo giving us a look at Lumiere and Cogsworth.  Not so sure what to make of them just yet, they are a little too strange looking for me.

Pitch Perfect 3 has found their replacement director in Trish Sie after Elizabeth Banks stepped back from helming the film due to scheduling conflicts.  Banks will still reprise her role in the third film centering on the Barden Bellas.

Confirmation of a King Arthur story line in Transformers: The Last Knight was given when it was announced Liam Garrigan will once again be playing the Once and Future King (he played the same role in ABC’s Once Upon A Time).  Santiago Cabrera will be portraying Arthur’s mentor Merlin.  The latest movie based on a Hasbro toy line has officially just given up attempting to make sense and is now completely crazy, right?

New Series and Renewals:

MTV’s Teen Wolf creator, Jeff Davis has taken up the mantle of turning the loved horror film Let the Right One In into a TV show.  There was a near miss at A&E over the last year, but now TNT has stepped in as the new network looking to carry the series.

Kevin Bacon and Amazon have teamed up to make a 10 episode Tremors series based on the 1990 comedy/ horror film the actor starred in.

Stranger Things has been renewed for a second season on Netflix.  Killjoys and Dark Matter have been given a season three greenlight at SyFy Network.

TV Casting News:

Jim Broadbent has been cast in an unknown role for the delayed, but much anticipated, seventh season of Game of Thrones.  Since Winds of Winter still hasn’t hit book stores, fans of the series can only speculate as to who the veteran actor will portray.

The cast for season 23 of Dancing with the Stars was announced and the celebrity dancers include Olympians Ryan Lochte and Laurie Hernandez along with Country music star Jana Kramer, politician Rick Perry, and a handful of reality stars and other athletes.  Series premieres September 12th and comeback the next day for recaps.

Nick “I’ve been rejected three times on National TV” Vial has been chosen as the newest Bachelor for season 21 of the ABC reality show, shocking fans who assumed it would have been sweetheart, veteran Luke Pell or John Krasinski lookalike Chase McNary.

The highly anticipated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods has found their Jesus in Lost actor Jeremy Davies.

Other Randomness:

September 1st came and went for us muggles with no invitation to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Joseph Baena (the love child between Arnold Schwarzenegger and his maid) and YouTuber Ben Hess filmed a reenactment of the after bar scene from Terminator 2 for reasons.

Are you interesting in a Transformers now a famous legend has been added to the plot?  Are you happy to see Jon Favreau back in the MCU?  Who do you think should pay Deathstroke?  Would you watch a TV show based on Tremors or Let the Right One In?  Talk to me in the comments section below and be sure to come back next week for another up of Nerd News!
