Trailers for two highly anticipated films were finally released, a remake and a sequel created some controversies, Ugly Betty fans may get their wish, and a deceased actor may make a cameo in the newest entry to the film franchise that made him a house hold name. All this and more in this week’s Nerdy News updates.
DC TV News:
The latest teaser trailer for the second season of Supergirl is all about the family reunion as Kal-El and Kara Zor-El team up to save a catastrophic plane crash.
Empire has released images for two new covers featuring the cast of Doctor Strange for their October issue. Inside in an interview with filmmakers reveal MCU Overlord Kevin Feige delayed the release of the film to match Benedict Cumberbatch’s schedule telling the filmmakers, “It’s got to be Benedict” after other actors were looked at for the role.
A new featurette was released asking “Who is Luke Cage?” So excited for this show! Come back for breakdowns of each episode starting on Friday.
There will be a minor Jurassic Park reunion in Thor: Ragnarok with Sam Neill joining the cast in a (for now) secret role. He will be joining fellow man vs dinosaurs co-star Jeff Goldblum.
Star Wars News:
Disney has confirmed there will be a third standalone Star Wars film which will be released in 2020. Lots of fans are hoping for a Boba Fett movie, but there are other rumors stating the film could center on (SPOILER ALERT) Ben Solo’s transition from Luke Skywalker protégé to the dark side. The first of the spinoff stories hits theaters in December with Rogue One, the second will be the untitled Young Han Solo film set to be released May 25, 2018.
The 68th Emmys hit an all-time low in ratings with only 9.7 million viewers.
The Walking Dead’s Wil Johnson has been cast in Starz’s Outlander as Joe Abernathy, Clair’s fellow doctor-in-training and new confidant in Boston. John Bell (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies) will be Ian Murray, Jamie’s nephew.
FX has given second season orders to Atlanta and Better Things.
A new promo for The Walking Dead was released this week and it took a break from all things Negan to showcase Ezekiel (Khary Payton), the leader of Kingdom.
Toby Stephens (Black Sails) has been cast to star as John Robinson in the Netflix reboot of the science fiction/family adventure TV show Lost in Space. He joins Taylor Russell who will be playing his daughter Judy.
The prequel for The Dark Tower, Wizard and Glass, is being developed into a TV series which will likely premiere in 2018 with 10-13 episodes (depending on how the story shapes up). Idris Elba and Tom Taylor are set to reprise their roles as Roland Deschain and Jake. No word on whether or on Matthew McConaughey will reprise his role as the Man in Black for the series.
While promoting the premiere of the second season of Superstore (which just received a full season order from the Peacock network), star America Ferrera was asked about a possible Ugly Betty reunion movie by a caller. Ferrera responded, “that is a conversation that’s happening… The more our fans make noise about it, the more likely it is, so keep it up.” Yes, mam! #HuluBringBackUglyBetty
New Movie Trailers from this week:
The much buzzed about Sci-fi/Romance, Passengers, finally dropped its first full trailer on Tuesday.
The first trailer for horror movie Fear, Inc. (limited release October 21st) looks like an interesting premise.
Five short teasers for the upcoming Ghost and the Shell are confusing (and a little unnervy) for those of us who haven’t seen the original anime film.
Bad Santa 2 graces us with a new and hilarious Red Band Trailer (Warning NSFW).
The Anton Fuqua bland remake of The Magnificent Seven won the weekend box office with an estimated $35 Million earned. Storks finished second with a reported $21.8 Million.
Despite giving the late Paul Walker’s character a perfect send off in the previous film, Fast 8 could still feature a cameo from Brain O’Conner. Vin Diesel and Universal have contacted the Walker family and his brothers have teased the former FBI Agent’s return to the series in a minor capacity.
Jared Leto is set to star as the controversial artist Andy Warhol in a new biopic and I couldn’t think of anyone better to portray the influential pop culture icon.
The remake of the late Robin Williams’ family adventure film Jumanji has mostly been met with rounds of dislike from fans. The Nerd Rage has been fanned further with the release of a promotional photo from the shoot featuring stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black hanging out in the jungle dressed for adventure. Lots of criticism was directed at the half-dressed Gillan, but there are a few rumors swirling around the four leads featured in the photo will be playing live action avatars for those playing the game in the real world which is why the actress looks she is something straight out of a 90’s action film. Still looks overly tacky even with the explanation.
Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan is in talks to play Will Scarlet in the generically titled Robin Hood: Origins. Taron Egerton (Kingsman: A Secret Service) is the titular character while Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) will be his best mate, Little John, and Eve Hewson (The Knick) is Maid Marion.
The Invitation director, Karyn Kusama, is reteaming with Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi to adapt the Chase Novak horror novel, Breed.
The Australian newspaper Herald Sun is reporting a prequel for Mad Max: Fury Road centering on Charlize Theron’s Furiosa is in preproduction. Director George Miller has talked about doing more Mad Max films, but another one in production so soon is a bit of a (welcome) shock.
New posters for the upcoming Power Rangers reboot shows off (kind of) the new Zords each Ranger will be piloting. While at New York Comic Con, the film is set to give audiences a first full look at the film and the Zords. Adding to the hype surrounding the reboot, comedian Bill Hader (Trainwreck, SNL) will be voicing the robot technician Alpha 5.
Horror sequel Rings release date has been pushed back for the third time to February 3, 2017. The latest reboot of Friday the 13th has also been delayed to October 13, 2017.
The two-part remake of the Stephen King classic, It, has wrapped production with one of the films producers releasing a photo of a Pennywise the Clown inspired Jack in the Box on Instagram.

There was a big uproar about Transformers: The Last Knight set photos, but can I just not care? It is a movie set, people, chill out.
Since TNT and TBS now have the broadcast rights to the entire Star Wars film catalog, the networks have been marathoning the six films all weekend and I have no doubt they will have several more in the future. For those of you who are like me and don’t enjoy the prequels, YouTube channel Cracked has come up with a theory that may help the three films be a little less horrible.
