Quantico – Boiler Room

Owen and Lydia turn up the pressure on the agents in training at the Farm, while in the present Alex attempts to thwart the CLF/AIC’s plans.

Spoilers for “Kubark”

Time for the exploitation portion of the CIA training. Owen knows your fears, he can see into your mind and know just how to push that button that makes you want to curl up in the fetal position and cry. This week he does just that to his recruits. Tagged with bio monitors, each of the trainees receives a bit of distressing news. Alex is sent to the bottom of the leader board for no reason, Ryan is sent a key Liam O’Connor left for him, Harry keeps getting pulled in for more medical tests, Dayana is told she made a mistake that could have her disbarred, Léon thinks a dangerous drug dealer has escaped prison, and so on and so forth.

I can’t help but think these guys should have realized they were being messed with after Owen told them he was going to tap into their fears to stress them out. It is a lot like last week when they should have realized being dropped off in the middle of the woods was a test to see if they were paying attention (sorry about missing last week, by the way. Being sick is no fun). At no point has any one of their big tests for the week actually been what they were told it was going to be. I get the show needs to create a reason for the instructors to explain why they are doing what they are doing for us in the audience, but it is painfully obvious and makes the scenes taking place at the Farm super tedious when they shouldn’t be.

Alex and Ryan were told by Miranda to lay low this week after an operative was mysteriously killed in Berlin, but Matthew Keys doesn’t agree. Alex exploits his opinion after she gets the idea to clone Owen’s phone when he shows the trainees he is going to be monitoring their vitals at an event. As she keeps close to Owen for the cloning tech to work, Ryan is to make small talk with the other trainees to find what their stress points are. Checking everyone’s feed later, Alex and Ryan find the Type-A, soccer mom from Hell, Lee (whom I kind of love), has been bugging Léon’s room.

After finding out the key from “Liam” was a rouse from Lydia and Owen to stress him out, Ryan realized his real weak point is Alex. Thankfully Owen and Lydia don’t see that (or so Ryan thinks, but we know better). The superstar trainee finally makes the connection to what Miranda and Matthew have been telling them since the beginning. The two lovers need to go at this mission alone. Working together will only be a flaw Owen can exploit. Alex gets it. For now.

In the present, the CLF/AIC (I don’t know with acronym I like better for these guys) is looking to cut most of the hostages loose in exchange for the hacker the group had the president pardon. Alex overhears some of the terrorists talk about freeing the hostages because they are dead weight. She finds Raina and the two form a plan to keep the hostages inside to weaken the CLF and keep them from getting the hacker. Raina is to signal to Miranda by mentioning the “boiler room” in reference to the fake bomb Liam planted in the boiler room of the hotel last season. The phrase is supposed to warn Miranda that this is a fake threat to keep the task force from figuring out the real threat. Alex also tells Raina to seek out Lydia for help since Ryan has been taken somewhere else after last week’s scuffle.

Back at command central, Miranda is pushing for the exchange. Shelby thinks handing the AIC what they want will be a disaster in the making. Miranda’s beau (I forget his name), agrees with the FBI director. Shelby and Miranda go to fetch the hacker. At first he refuses, but Miranda has a little heart to heart with him, informing him he “didn’t live to [his] end of the bargain.” Eventually he agrees to go, but tips Shelby off to an email from her work server she needs to read.

Lydia doesn’t work out as Alex hoped. The CIA operative instructs Raina to allow the trade to happen against Alex’s wishes. Raina does as Lydia wants and allows the hostage exchange to go on, but she does relay Alex’s message. Miranda pretends not to understand and hands the hacker over. Alex, in a way too late attempt to throw off the exchange, starts to fire her gun out of a window alerting the CLF/AIC to her presence in the building.

The CLF gets the hacker, but he quickly kills himself after doing their bidding (raising a hell of a lot more questions). The task force is celebrating a win, but Shelby finds the email she was alerted to with the subject line of “Miranda.” Inside simply tells her “She is one of them.” The CLF gather in numbers and storm the room where Alex is camping out. She pulls down her CLF mask as she declares “let’s do this.”

Who is the CLF/AIC?

While it seems as if the uptight wedding planner, Lee, is up to some shenanigans, I’m not so sure she is bugging Léon’s room for Owen. It seems like a way too easy of an answer this early in the show. Maybe she is just hoping for some sexy times she can listen in on? Léon is macking really hard on Dayana.

Last week, we found out Harry is not CIA. So, what in the hell is he doing at the summit if he is not on mission for the Company? And what the hell happened between Ryan and Harry? Or Sebastian and Harry? And did Harry and Will do more than just have a drink? I know that was last week, but I was really hoping for some answers there.

While it may look suspicious, I think it was totally in character for Lydia to suggest to Raina to allow for the hostage exchange to happen without incident. While at the Farm, Lydia consistently preached for the trainees to keep their cover no matter what. Raina preventing the exchange from happening would have tipped the CLF off she was working with Alex. Lydia may have made good with her father for now, but there is going to be a big falling out later (maybe when she figures out what dear ol’ dad is up to?).

After his quick agreement with Miranda, I’m not so sure her lover boy is not working with her in this whole ordeal.

What did you think of last night’s Quantico? Are you confused after the whole ordeal with the hacker? What do you think Miranda’s plans are? Let me hear your thoughts in the comments section below.
